Background:

Founded in 1927, Volvo Group is one of the world’s leading producers and service suppliers of trucks, buses, construction equipment, engines and drive systems, marine and industrial power systems, as well as aerospace systems. With 25 manufacturing bases spread across 25 countries worldwide, Volvo Group has around 76,000 employees globally and sells its products in over 130 markets.

The Global Magazine is an internal publication of the Volvo Group for its staff, publishing 6 issues each year in 11 languages including Swedish, English, German, Japanese and Chinese. MTS has been taking on the Chinese translation work for our overseas partner since 2008.

Challenges:

  • Accuracy: As a globally based company, Global Magazine is very meaningful to its staff located around the world, who read information about the Group from this magazine. The magazine contains a vast amount of up-to-date information about different place names, people and various events; therefore delivering accurate translations is extremely crucial.
  • Expertise: Readers of the magazine are all industry professionals and experts; as a consequence it’s not a simple task to produce translations completely accurate to meet their high requirements. Though the linguists possess the relevant background, they still needed to check numerous specialized technical content, recent-model components and work flows, as a result, the time spent on consulting would sometimes be far more than that spent on the translation work itself.
  • Appeal: The audiences are not only experts but also general readers who are fond of style-changing, interesting and impressive articles. So what the client needs are fascinating translations combined with local elements, in addition to reflecting the source texts to the greatest extent, instead of being limited by it. All of these factors made this project more difficult than usual.

Our Solutions:

  • Recognizing the difficulty of the assignment, we located and assigned qualified linguists of a lively disposition to the task, in addition, we also regularly changed our linguists to keep a level of freshness in the translation.
  • To guarantee accuracy and professionalism, each linguist chosen for the project was an expert in the relevant field.
  • Account managers communicated with our client to confirm all the glossaries before importing them into a TM. A specialized TM was created to ensure consistency of the terminology and record all the updates.
  • An in-house linguist was also assigned to finish the final polishing, making the translations accurate, fluent, technical and colorful.

Conclusion

It is 3 years since the "Global Magazine” project started, we’ve completed translations totaling over 360,000 words and the resulting documents proved very attractive to its readers
